Web Desk (MNN); Senior student leader in Bangladesh has been shot in the head in the southern city of Khulna, marking the second such incident this month as political tensions intensify following the killing of youth activist Sharif Osman Hadi.
According to Bangladeshi media, Mohammad Md Motaleb Sikder, 42, a senior figure of the student-led National Citizen Party (NCP), was attacked by unknown assailants on Monday in Khulnaās Sonadanga area.
He sustained a bullet wound to the left side of his head and was shifted to Khulna Medical College Hospital in critical condition.
Police said a manhunt had been launched to track down those responsible for the attack.
Some local media outlets later reported that Sikder had succumbed to his injuries, although no official confirmation was issued by authorities at the time of reporting.
The latest shooting comes only days after the killing of Sharif Osman Hadi, a prominent youth activist and organiser of recent student-led demonstrations.
Hadi was shot earlier this month in Dhakaās Bijoynagar area while campaigning ahead of the February 12 general elections. He was later airlifted to Singapore for medical treatment, where he eventually died.
Hadiās death sparked protests in Dhaka and several other cities, with demonstrators demanding justice and accountability. The incidents have renewed concerns over political violence and security conditions in Bangladesh.
The National Citizen Party was formed earlier this year following the ouster of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina.
The party emerged from student movements such as Students Against Discrimination and the Jatiya Nagorik Committee, and has rapidly gained influence among student groups across the country.
Authorities said investigations into both shootings are under way.
