ISLAMABAD (MNN); The Tehreek Tahafuz-e-Ayeen-e-Pakistan (TTAP), a coalition of opposition parties, on Saturday condemned the 27th Constitutional Amendment, terming it an attack on the basic structure of the Constitution, and unveiled a nationwide protest campaign to resist it.
The announcement followed a high-level meeting chaired by TTAP President Mahmood Khan Achakzai and attended by prominent political leaders, including Asad Qaiser, Allama Raja Nasir Abbas, PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Khan, Salman Akram Raja, BNP chief Akhtar Mengal, SUP leader Zain Shah, BNP’s Sajid Tareen, Mustafa Nawaz Khokhar, and Firdous Shamim Naqvi.
According to the joint statement, the 27th Amendment, along with the previously passed 26th Amendment, weakens the core democratic framework and places the judiciary under the influence of the executive. The participants rejected what they described as “person-specific amendments” and demanded that the Constitution be restored to its original shape.
The movement said both amendments had undermined judicial independence, restricted the powers of the Supreme Court, and compromised its very existence.
The TTAP leadership also hailed the resignations of senior Supreme Court judges Justice Mansoor Ali Shah and Justice Athar Minallah, calling their step a significant act of defiance against what they called “constitutional theft,” and commended them for honouring their oath.
The alliance further expressed support for the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Aman Jirga declaration, urging its complete implementation.
Unveiling its protest strategy, TTAP announced that Members of the National Assembly and Senate will march from Parliament to the Supreme Court on Monday.
A resolution opposing the 27th Amendment will be moved in the KP Assembly the same day, while lawmakers in Punjab will march from the provincial assembly to the Lahore High Court.
Lawyers in Lahore are expected to join the demonstrations, and a nationwide “Black Day” will be observed on Friday.
The movement also demanded the immediate release of PTI founder Imran Khan, his wife Bushra Bibi, and all detained PTI leaders and workers. It further called for the release of the arrested leadership and members of the Baloch Yakjehti Committee.
