ISLAMABAD (MNN); The federal government has introduced a large-scale subsidy programme to encourage the use of electric vehicles (EVs) nationwide, with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif approving financial incentives for electric bikes, rickshaws, loaders and cars.
According to a notification issued by the Ministry of Industries and Production, the subsidy scheme will be implemented in phases, beginning with support for 41,000 electric vehicles. This initial phase includes subsidies for 40,000 electric motorbikes and 1,000 electric rickshaws and loaders.
Under the first phase, buyers of electric motorbikes will be eligible for a subsidy of up to Rs80,000, which will be directly transferred to the bank accounts of approved beneficiaries.
To further ease access to environmentally friendly transport, the government has also arranged convenient instalment plans for electric bikes and rickshaws, aiming to make low-cost EV options affordable for the general public.
Officials clarified that the subsidy facility will only apply to registered electric vehicles, while unregistered vehicles will not qualify for financial assistance.
In the second phase, subsidies amounting to Rs8.95 billion will be extended to an additional 78,170 electric vehicles. Authorities confirmed that the transfer of subsidy funds to verified applicants has already commenced.
The government plans to allocate more than Rs100 billion in subsidies for the promotion of electric vehicles by 2030. Officials said the initiative is designed to support clean, affordable and sustainable transportation while reducing reliance on fossil fuels and curbing environmental pollution.
