TEHRAN/ISLAMABAD (MNN); Iran has expressed appreciation for Pakistan’s continued efforts to promote regional peace and stability as Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi held talks with his Iranian counterpart, Eskandar Momeni, in Tehran on Monday.
Naqvi, who arrived in the Iranian capital earlier in the day on an official visit, was received at the airport by Momeni before the two ministers held a meeting at the Iranian Interior Ministry.
According to Pakistan’s Interior Ministry, the talks covered Pakistan-Iran bilateral relations, the latest regional situation and progress in ongoing cooperation between the two countries’ interior ministries in various fields.
During the meeting, Momeni thanked Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Chief of Defence Forces and Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir for their efforts aimed at advancing peace and stability in the region.
“We are grateful for Pakistan’s continuous efforts to establish peace in the region,” the Iranian interior minister said, describing Naqvi’s visit as beneficial.
The two sides also reviewed cooperation in areas falling within the respective interior ministries and discussed ways to further strengthen institutional coordination between Pakistan and Iran.
Naqvi said Pakistan and Iran enjoyed close and longstanding ties and expressed confidence that bilateral relations would become stronger in the coming days.
The Tehran visit comes amid Pakistan’s continuing diplomatic engagement over the wider regional crisis. Islamabad has previously facilitated contacts between Iran and the United States and has supported dialogue and diplomatic efforts aimed at reducing tensions and achieving a peaceful settlement.
Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry has said that Islamabad remains committed to dialogue, restraint and sustained diplomacy, while regarding the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding as an important framework for efforts toward regional peace and stability.
However, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei had said before Naqvi’s visit that the talks would primarily focus on bilateral relations and that there was no plan for the exchange of specific messages concerning mediation.
Pakistan and Iran have also expanded cooperation in security-related areas. During earlier meetings, the two interior ministries discussed counter-terrorism, counter-narcotics, border management, prevention of illegal immigration and efforts against human trafficking.
Naqvi and Momeni had also held talks during the Iranian minister’s visit to Pakistan in July, when they reviewed bilateral relations, trade, regional developments and avenues for expanding cooperation.
The latest meeting in Tehran underscores the continued high-level engagement between Islamabad and Tehran as both countries seek closer coordination on bilateral and regional matters.
