RAWALPINDI (MNN); England will need to deliver their best performances against Pakistan and Sri Lanka to qualify for the final of the ODI tri-series, white-ball head coach Brendon McCullum has said, acknowledging the strength of both teams and the challenges of playing in subcontinental conditions.
Speaking ahead of England’s campaign in Pakistan, McCullum said competing in the region required flexibility and the ability to adapt quickly to different playing conditions.
“Pakistan are a very strong side, obviously. When you come to this part of the world, you have to do things differently. Playing subcontinent teams in subcontinent conditions has its own challenges,” he said.
McCullum said England aimed to become a side capable of competing against any opposition in all conditions, adding that the team would embrace the challenge of adjusting to changing circumstances.
He said the tri-series would be particularly demanding because England would have to face two different opponents, both of whom posed significant challenges.
“We’re respectful of how strong both Pakistan and Sri Lanka are. We’re going to have to be at our best to give ourselves a chance of making the final,” he said.
McCullum Delighted to Return to Pakistan
The former New Zealand captain expressed pleasure at returning to Pakistan, praising the hospitality and competitive cricket experienced by England during previous tours.
He said England had toured Pakistan several times in recent years and had enjoyed both the warm reception and closely contested matches.
McCullum acknowledged that England had experienced victories and defeats against Pakistan, describing the upcoming tri-series encounters against Pakistan and Sri Lanka as an exciting challenge.
“The weather is beautiful, the conditions are amazing, and the hospitality is always outstanding. We feel very pleased to be here,” he said.
England Focus on Adaptability
McCullum said England would not follow a rigid playing formula, instead focusing on responding to the demands of each match and adapting as quickly as possible.
He said the team wanted to remain competitive against every opponent, regardless of the conditions, and play the best cricket possible to improve its chances of reaching the final.
Pakistan, Sri Lanka Fined for Slow Over-Rates
Meanwhile, Pakistan and Sri Lanka have been fined for maintaining slow over-rates during the opening match of the ODI tri-series in Rawalpindi, the International Cricket Council (ICC) announced on Monday.
According to the ICC, match referee Jeff Crowe fined Pakistan players 10 per cent of their match fees after the team was found to be two overs short of its target within the allotted time.
Sri Lanka players were fined five per cent of their match fees after their side was ruled to be one over short.
The ICC said its Code of Conduct for Players stipulates a fine of five per cent of a player’s match fee for every over a team fails to bowl within the allotted time.
The penalties followed the opening fixture of the tri-series played in Rawalpindi on Sunday.
