ISLAMABAD (MNN); Islamabad police have decided to take strict action against unlicensed and underage drivers, with Inspector General of Police (IGP) Islamabad, Captain (Retd) Sohail Chaudhry, announcing that vehicles driven without valid licences will be impounded at the relevant police stations.
He said vehicles driven by underage motorists would be returned after their parents appeared at the police station and provided a written undertaking.
The IGP announced the measures during a meeting with a delegation of the Islamabad High Court Journalists Association, led by its President Asad Malik and General Secretary Asif Naveed.
Discussing law and order, Sohail Chaudhry said police patrolling was being intensified to curb street crime in the federal capital. He added that the Safe City project and its surveillance cameras would also be utilised to help prevent and detect criminal activities.
The IGP said shipping containers had been removed from Islamabad and routine activities across the city had resumed. He added that more than half of the police checkpoints outside the Red Zone had been removed, with the police now focusing on increased patrolling rather than maintaining a large number of checkpoints.
He said addressing the issues faced by police personnel was also among his priorities. During his previous posting in Multan, he had resolved complaints lodged by more than 19,000 police personnel, he said.
The IGP added that he continued to hear officers’ and personnel’s grievances personally on a daily basis and reviewed disciplinary matters on merit to provide relief where warranted.
Reiterating the traffic enforcement policy, he said vehicles driven without valid driving licences would remain impounded at the relevant police stations until their drivers obtained licences.
In cases involving underage drivers, vehicles would be released after a parent appeared at the police station and submitted an undertaking, he added.
