LAHORE (MNN): Thick fog enveloped several cities of Punjab on Saturday, sharply reducing visibility and prompting authorities to shut down major motorways at various locations as a precautionary step.
In Lahore, dense fog limited visibility to nearly 100 metres in many localities, disrupting road traffic and routine activities. Officials reported that the city’s overall Air Quality Index stood at 189, reflecting unhealthy air conditions.
Motorway authorities temporarily closed several key routes due to poor visibility. The Lahore–Sialkot Motorway (M-11) was shut, while the M-2 remained closed from Lahore to Kot Momin. Traffic was also suspended on the M-3 between Faizpur and Jaranwala, and on the M-4 from Pindi Bhattian to Faisalabad.
Officials said the closures were aimed at safeguarding lives and property. Motorists were advised to avoid non-essential travel and to use headlights and fog lights if driving could not be postponed.
Meteorological officials warned that foggy conditions may continue in parts of central Punjab and urged the public to follow official weather updates. Traffic police also appealed to commuters to drive carefully, reduce speed, and maintain safe distances on the roads.
