LAHORE (MNN); A motorcycle dealer involved in selling bikes on instalments has been issued e-challans exceeding Rs2.38 million due to repeated traffic violations linked to motorcycles still registered in his name, officials said on Tuesday.
The trader, Sadiq Khan, has been running a motorcycle instalment business in Garhi Shahu for the past 15 years. According to Safe City authorities, traffic e-challans amounting to Rs2,388,700 were issued against motorcycles registered under his ownership.
Officials revealed that nearly 500 motorcycles are still registered in Khanâs name, resulting in a total of 2,071 traffic challans. The issue surfaced when a traffic warden stopped a motorcycle at Campus Bridge and discovered it was registered to Khan, with unpaid fines of Rs12,000 against that single vehicle.
Subsequent verification using Khanâs CNIC showed cumulative unpaid challans exceeding Rs2.3 million, police said.
Speaking to the media, Khan explained that many customers failed to transfer ownership of motorcycles into their own names even after completing instalment payments, leaving him legally liable for traffic violations committed by others.
Traffic police have given Khan a few days to settle the outstanding fines, warning that failure to do so could result in the cancellation of his national identity card.
The incident has once again highlighted concerns regarding ownership transfer practices in instalment-based vehicle sales and the legal risks faced by sellers.
