ISLAMABAD (MNN); Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Monday announced that Pakistan will host the signing ceremony of the Iran–US agreement in Geneva, Switzerland, on June 19 (Friday), describing the understanding as a “historic milestone of peace”.
Addressing the National Assembly, he said the world had witnessed a “great victory for peace” as tensions subsided and the “flames of war began to die down.” He termed the moment historic, saying it would be remembered in golden words by history.
PM Shehbaz said the agreement marked a breakthrough after months of conflict that began with US-Israeli strikes on Iran in February, which had caused thousands of deaths and disrupted global energy markets. He said the deal represented the triumph of peace, dialogue, and diplomacy over war.
He told lawmakers that under the framework, Iran and the United States had agreed to an immediate and permanent cessation of hostilities on all fronts, including Lebanon. He described it as a moment of divine blessing after “three months and sixteen days of hardship,” adding that “the sun of peace has risen after a dark night of war.”
The prime minister congratulated the Pakistani nation and the global community, also extending appreciation to political leadership including Nawaz Sharif, Asif Ali Zardari, and Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, as well as all political parties.
He also praised US President Donald Trump, Iranian leadership including Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei and President Masoud Pezeshkian, and negotiators from both sides for their patience and wisdom during talks.
PM Shehbaz lauded the role of Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, and Chinese President Xi Jinping for supporting the peace process and facilitating diplomacy.
He specifically acknowledged Chief of Army Staff and Chief of Defence Forces Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, saying he played a vital role in supporting peace efforts and remained actively engaged throughout the negotiations. He also praised Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, and Pakistani diplomatic and security officials for their contributions.
The prime minister said the war had placed immense pressure on Pakistan’s economy and the global financial system, but Pakistan’s people had shown patience and resilience during difficult times.
He expressed hope that the benefits of global economic stability following the agreement would be passed on to the people of Pakistan.
