ISLAMABAD (MNN); Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan’s sister, Aleema Khan, on Tuesday questioned the government’s handling of the former prime minister’s medical treatment after he was taken to hospital for the fifth time to receive treatment for his eye condition.
In a statement posted on X, Aleema said the family learned that Imran Khan had been taken to the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) during the early hours of June 15. She claimed that the family became aware of the visit only after PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar shared the information on social media.
Aleema expressed a lack of confidence in medical reports issued by PIMS regarding Imran Khan’s health. She argued that the hospital had previously made claims about significant improvement in his eyesight, which she said were later disputed by Imran Khan himself when he met his lawyer in Adiala Jail.
Questioning the need for repeated treatment, she asked why a fifth eye injection had become necessary if his condition had improved as previously stated.
She demanded that Imran Khan be examined and treated by independent medical specialists at Shifa International Hospital in Islamabad, describing the matter as urgent and requiring immediate attention.
Aleema also accused authorities of violating court orders that allow six family members to meet Imran Khan every Tuesday. According to her, these meetings have been repeatedly restricted over the past eight months. She noted that her sister, Dr. Uzma Khan, had only been permitted limited access, with her last meeting taking place in December 2025.
She further criticized what she described as the continued use of isolation and restrictions against the former premier and called for full implementation of court directives regarding family visits.
According to Aleema, Imran Khan is entitled under prison regulations to weekly phone calls with his sons, regular meetings with family members and lawyers, access to books, newspapers and television, as well as proper medical care and notification of family members before any medical procedure.
She emphasized that court orders also permit meetings with lawyers, relatives and party representatives on Tuesdays and Thursdays and urged authorities to restore all of his legal rights, including access to independent medical treatment in the presence of family members.
On Monday, Imran Khan was taken to PIMS for a follow-up examination and received his fifth anti-VEGF intravitreal injection for his eye condition. Hospital officials stated that he was assessed by eye specialists and was found to be clinically stable.
Imran Khan previously received the same treatment on April 28. His eye condition, identified as right central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO), was first diagnosed in January. He underwent his first procedure on January 24, followed by additional injections in February and March.
The issue has become part of an ongoing dispute between the government and opposition parties. PTI leaders have repeatedly accused authorities of lacking transparency regarding Imran Khan’s medical treatment and restricting access for his personal doctors. The government has denied these allegations.
The opposition continues to demand that the former prime minister be shifted to Shifa International Hospital, treated under the supervision of his own physicians, and granted unrestricted access to family members.
