ISLAMABAD (MNN) Special Report; News and speculation surrounding the possibility of relief for Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan, including reports of his medical examination at a private hospital in Islamabad following a direction of the Supreme Court of Pakistan, coincided with a sharp decline in the Pakistan Stock Exchange on Tuesday.
The benchmark KSE-100 Index fell 2,546.94 points, or 1.41 per cent, to close at 177,955.50, compared with Monday’s close of 180,502.44. The index remained under pressure throughout the session after reaching an intraday high of 180,602.44 and falling to a low of 177,866.04.
Market participants said that political uncertainty, along with concerns over the possibility of renewed political agitation, contributed to a cautious and risk-averse sentiment among investors. Some business circles believe that any political development involving the PTI founder could have implications for economic activity and investor confidence.
A senior business figure, speaking on condition of anonymity, said he expected volatility and bearish sentiment to persist for the coming weeks if political uncertainty continued. However, he stressed that the direction of the market would also depend on economic indicators, corporate results, interest rates and developments in international markets.
The stock market was already facing pressure from broader geopolitical and economic concerns, particularly developments involving the United States and Iran and their potential impact on international oil prices and regional stability.
Analysts caution that it would be difficult to attribute Tuesday’s decline to a single political development. The sharp fall reflected a combination of factors, including domestic political uncertainty, regional geopolitical risks and investor concerns over market conditions.
With 86 KSE-100 companies closing in negative territory, against 13 gainers and one unchanged, the session reflected broad-based selling pressure.
The latest decline has once again highlighted the sensitivity of Pakistan’s equity market to political developments, with investors closely monitoring developments surrounding the PTI founder as well as regional geopolitical and economic conditions.
